The Jester Owl knew more than it let on. Long ago, it had learned that wisdom was of little use when nobody wanted to hear the truth.
So it became a fool.
It spoke in riddles, laughed at serious matters, and treated everything important with suspicious indifference.
Its golden outline was the only thing it had kept from its former life. Nobody knew whether it was a sign of royal ancestry or simply a prank gone terribly wrong.
The Jester Owl never bothered to correct either version of the story.
