The Process

Back in the day, in the architect’s department, the process was the thing and the end result was more of an intermediate stage from which we learn more. Which is more important, the journey or getting there? Well, studying is a journey, it takes you somewhere, still.

Now I’m opening my own painting process, which for me, to achieve the best end result, an intermediate stage (at the moment) is really suitable. It took a bit of development. I’ve noticed that I’m not the only one, but few people work like this. I try to keep every stage of work fun. That’s right, this is possible when you know why that work phase is important.

I make the sketch and the first idea with a pencil in a notebook or directly on the iPad. On the iPad, I create and carry forward my idea of ​​painting. I’m continuing to finish this step in Photoshop. And I’ll adjust the tones before I make a ready-to-print file for canvas.

I am sending this digital painting to a relevant partner for printing. The painting often arrives to me already in wedge frames. The process should also be made easier.

In English, the word embellished is for the next work step. Doesn’t really translate into Finnish very matter-of-factly in this case. Painting continues with “real” paints and brushes. I get the texture and better tones in the painting, which you can’t get with 2D printing. I played with transparencies of different colors. I also use color-thickening pastes.

This is how the journey of the painting has reached the stage where I no longer work on it. Next, its task is to delight and cause some thought, even confusion in the viewers.

This Koivupöllö painting is now at AVA-Galleria Merimiehenkatu 27 until the end of this year. The birch owl painting (80×80 cm) was made according to the process mentioned above. The draft stages were longer than usual in this process.

Prosessi

Aikoinaan arkkitehti osastolla prosessi oli se juttu ja lopputulos enemmänkin välivaihe josta opitaan lisää. Kumpi on tärkeämpää matka vai perille pääsy? No, opiskeluhan on matka, se vie jonnekin, edelleen.

Nyt avaan omaa maalaus prosessiani joka minulle parhaan lopputuloksen, välivaiheen saavuttamiseksi (tällä hetkellä) on oikein sopiva. Vaati hieman kehittelyä. Olen huomannut etten ole ainoa, mutta ei kovin moni työskentele näin. Yritän pitää jokaisen työvaiheen hauskana. Aivan, tämä on mahdollista kun tietää miksi kyseinen työvaihe on tärkeä.

Luonnoksen ja ensimmäisen ajattelun teen lyijykynällä lehtiöön tai tai suoraan iPadiin. iPadissä teen ja vien ajatustani maalauksesta eteenpäin. Jatkan tämän vaiheen viimeistelyä Photo shopissa. Ja säädän vielä sävyjä ennen kuin teen canvakselle valmiin tulostus tiedoston.

Tämän digitaalisen maalauksen lähetän tulostettavaksi asialliselle yhteistyökumppanille. Maalaus saapuu minulle usein jo valmiiksi kiilakehyksissä. Prosessia kannattaa myös helpottaa.

Englannin kielessä seuraavasta työvaiheesta käytetään sanaa embellished. Ei käänny oikein suomeksi kovinkaan asiallisesti tässä tapauksessa. Maalaaminen jatkuu ”oikeilla” maaleilla ja pensseleillä. Saan maalaukseen tekstuuria ja parempia sävyjä mitä 2D tulostamalla ei voi saada. Leikin eri värien läpinäkyvyyksillä. Käytän myös värejä paksuntavia pastoja.

Näin maalauksen matka on päässyt vaiheeseen että en työstä sitä enään. Seuraavaksi sen tehtävä on ilahduttaa ja aiheuttaa jotain ajatusta, vaikka hämmennystä katsojissa.

Tämä Koivupöllö taulu on nyt nähtävissä AVA-Galleriassa Merimiehenkatu 27 tämän vuoden loppuun saakka. Koivupöllö taulu (80×80 cm) on tehty edellä mainitun prosessin mukaan. Luonnos vaiheet olivat tässä prosessissa tavallista pidempiä.
